A FEW MINOR NIGGLES

Optimistic speedo, no lumbar adjstment for the driver's seat, no reach adjustment for the steering wheel (just rake). Engine lacks refinement under acceleration and vibrates below 1400rpm. Add some ZX1 to the fuel and its a lot smoother!

Should have reversing sensors!

RAV 4 TUNING

 INTRODUCTION

Our Rav4 is a 2005  '55 reg 2L d4d XTR with 40k miles on the odometer and has fixed four wheel drive, unlike the 2006 models which don't. With 116bhp the performance is 'adequate' and in reality normal driving requires most of the available torque, with little left in reserve. Towing would be tedious.... Fuel consumption was around 34mpg. Annoyingly, the speedo overreads by 4mph at 30 to 40mph and 5mph above 40. So an indicated 76mph is a true 70 - confirmed by speed via the diagnostic port and by sat nav. The tacho is accurate however.

As with any 'new' vehicle, the first thing we did was to give it a 'once over on the lift at Wansbeck Performance and then change the oil, air, fuel and pollen filters. We used Millers fully synthetic XFG oil, and also replaced the gearbox and transfer box oil. The diff has yet to be done.

ZX1 was added to the engine and transmission and Millers DS4 is always used in the fuel, along with ZX1 once per month. Everyone who has tried ZX1 has noticed the friction reducing power of it on the responsiveness, easy of starting and general 'willingness' of the engine. Using Millers oils and additives and ZX1 gives extra protection a tuned diesel needs. (We recommend changing the engine oil twice as often as well)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Not having driven a 4x4 for many years, I am pleasantly surprised by the abilities of the Rav4. The ride comfort is very good - similar to an X-Type and almost as good as a Rover 75. The brakes are powerful and not too heavy, the gearchange light and slick (after we lubricated the linkage during servicing) and the clutch equally effortless. However the steering is over assisted and lacks feel but is precise with little understeer.

The handling is good for a 2tonne vehicle and the Bridgestone Dueller tyres grip well in all conditions. It was particularly impressive on recent ice, snow, & slush, shrugging off 10% hills without any sign of wheel spin whatsoever.

Yet again, a very pleasant & capable vehicle is let down by inadequate performance. Fortunately, our work with a Turbotune 2DT has transformed this with an estimated 25% increase in torque and 20% increase in bhp. I'd expect the performance to be a match for the 2.2L 136bhp model.

Fuel consumption on short daily journeys is now about 40mpg and a recent briskly(!) driven 380mile round trip saw about 43mpg. Driven less hurriedly, I'd expect 45+mpg. The fuel computer was, however somewhat optimistic reading 52-54mpg! This is a side effect of common rail tuning boxes. Or at least those that are actually working. Those that don't affect the readout do so because they aren't doing anything for most of the time!
